Ralf Schwieger

Even if few come from Germany, some noses from this country have distinguished themselves in the field of perfumery. This was the case with Ralf Schwieger. This German, a trained chemist, is a multi-faceted talented designer. We owe him many bestsellers, notably for the Yves Saint-Laurent and Frédéric Malle houses.Ralf Schwieger’s first olfactory memoriesRalf Schwieger was born in Germany, in a rural region of Westphalia. He remembers this very calm place, famous for its cold and gray winters… In itself, nothing very exciting even if he is attached to it. Ralf Schwieger grew up near the forest, surrounded by greenery.

This detail may seem insignificant but plays a huge role in his conception of perfumery. Indeed, Ralf Schwieger particularly likes mossy and woody scents. Very early on, he had a real passion for smells. Likewise, he wondered at a very young age about the absence of scent… As such, he liked to bring the freshly fallen snow on the trees to his nose to try to smell it. According to him, they exuded a certain purity. Thus, the aerial and almost fragile aspect of a gasoline is an essential point not to be overlooked. Over time, he has remained very close to nature and likes to think of perfumery as something primary, almost innate. Most often, Ralf Schwieger finds inspiration in colors or textures. Likewise, insects literally fascinate him and butterflies are by far his favorite. But then, let’s see what course Ralf Schwieger followed to reach the highest peak in perfumery …

Ralf Schwieger’s journey

Although he always liked smells, Ralf Schwieger did not take an interest in perfumery itself until quite late. A chemist by training with a scientific background, he studied in Berlin. Then, he joined the Roure perfume school, in Grasse, at the age of 30. Then, once his diploma in hand, he was recruited by Givaudan. It is within this company that he developed his greatest successes. For example, we also owe him L’Eau des Merveilles by Hermès or Lipstick Rose by Frederic Malle. For the first of them, he focused around ambergris and tried to craft a scent that felt like salty skin after a bath in the ocean. What is more, this juice completely devoid of floral notes, which is at the very least very rare,

Ralf Schwieger is a character full of daring and dynamism. He always likes to take on new challenges. As such, he recently created an assortment of three essences for Atelier Cologne, taking up the challenge of delivering extreme freshness to us while making it sunny.
